Distance continues to be a hot topic of discussion on all professional golf tours around the world. Players are hitting the golf ball further and further and many in the industry are questioning whether or not limits should be placed on golf ball and club designs.

But until any restrictions are enforced by either the R&A or USGA players are going to hit the golf ball further than ever which makes for very interesting viewing.

The 10 longest drives off all-time in tournament play:

1. Carl Cooper

Carl Cooper

The longest golf drive ever recorded was 787 yards by Carl Cooper at the 1992 Texas Open. This monster drive got some assistance from a cart path and a steep downhill, it can be argued that it doesn’t count but technically it does since there is no remarks column in the rules book.

Unfortunately for Cooper, this mammoth drive ended up a long way away from the green and he ended up making a double bogey on the hole.

2. Mike Dobbyn

Mike Dobbyn
Mike Dobbyn. Source.
  • Distance: 551 yards
  • Tournament: Butch Harmon’s Pro Tour (Mini-tour)
  • Golf course: Dragon Ridge Country Club
  • Hole: 18th

Mike Dobbyn broke Mike Austin’s record in 2007 in Henderson, Nevada. Dobbyn, a long drive professional, was playing a mini-tour event at Dragon Ridge Country Club when he managed to hit a 551-yard drive down the par 5, 18th hole. Dobbyn recalls that the tee shot was slightly downwind and thanks to the high desert temperatures the ball was traveling a mile.

His record-breaking drive landed on a downslope which propelled it forward with the ball coming to rest pin high about 40 yards to the right of the green. In a bizarre twist to the story, Dobbyn’s drive shaft broke in half on his follow-through.

3. Mike Austin

Mike Austin
Mike Austin. Source.
  • Distance: 515 yards
  • Tournament: 1974 National Seniors Open Championship
  • Golf course: Winterwood Golf Course
  • Hole: 5th hole

Carl Cooper stole the top spot from Mike Austin in 1992 but Austin’s drive is arguably the most impressive one out of the two. Due to the validity of Cooper’s hit Austin still held the record for the longest golf drive in a tournament in the Guinness Book of World Records until that record was broken in 2007 by Mike Dobbyn.

A 515-yard drive is very impressive, what’s more, impressive is the fact that Austin was 64 when he hit this drive and it was with a persimmon wood and an old-school balata golf ball. Austin did have a 35 mph wind that was assisting him, but regardless it is still a very impressive feat.

4. Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods

Tiger has had his injury struggles over the last decade but even with those struggles Tiger still hits it a long way off of the tee. His longest tee shot however came all the way back in 2002 at the Mercedes Championship in Hawaii. Tiger unleashed a drive down the 18th hole at the Plantation Course at Kapalua that went a mammoth 498 yards. This drive by Tiger was the longest drive on the PGA Tour in nearly 40 years and to this day it is still one of the longest drives ever hit by a professional golfer.

5. Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson
  • Distance: 489 yards
  • Tournament: 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play
  • Golf course: Austin Country Club
  • Hole: 12th holes

Dustin Johnson is known for his length off of the tee. DJ doesn’t hold back with driver in hand and he definitely didn’t do that on the 12th hole at the 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event in Austin, Texas when he hit it a massive 489 yards.

The 12th hole does play downhill and the hole runs away from you, but regardless of those assisting factors it still requires a huge hit to advance the golf ball nearly 500 yards. Unfortunately, this sweetly struck drive wasn’t recorded on camera.

6. Max Homa

  • Distance: 477 yards
  • Tournament: 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions
  • Golf Course: Kapalua Plantation Course
  • Hole: 7th hole

Max Homa, not typically known for his driving distance, astonished the golf world with a 477-yard drive on the par-4 7th hole at Kapalua’s Plantation Course during the third round of the 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions. This remarkable shot set a new record for the longest drive in the PGA Tour’s ShotLink era (since 2003), surpassing the previous record held by Davis Love III. The 7th hole’s significant downhill slope and favorable downwind conditions contributed to this extraordinary feat.

7. Davis Love III

Davis Love III
Davis Love III. Source.
  • Distance: 476 yards
  • Tournament: 2004 Mercedes Championship
  • Golf course: Kapalua Plantation Course
  • Hole: 18th hole

Davis Love III isn’t known for overpowering golf courses off of the tee, but Davis managed to raise some eyebrows when he drove it 476 yards down the 18th hole at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in the 2004 Mercedes Benz Championship. The 18th at the Plantation course with its steep downhill fairway has seen many long drives in its time, but only Tiger has managed to hit it further than Davis on this driver-friendly hole.

8. Jeff Sluman

Jeff Sluman
Jeff Sluman. Source.
  • Distance: 473 yards
  • Tournament: 2003 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic
  • Golf course: PGA West, Palmer Course
  • Hole: 14th hole

Jeff Sluman was a regular on the PGA Tour in the 2000s. Sluman wasn’t always at the top of the leaderboard, but he was one of the longest hitters on tour. Sluman, a former PGA Championship winner, launched one of the longest drives ever at the 2003 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at PGA West with an unprecedented 473-yard drive.

9. Charley Hoffman

Charley Hoffman
Charley Hoffman
  • Distance: 467 yards
  • Tournament: 2009 Texas Open
  • Golf course: LaCantera Golf Club
  • Hole: 1st hole

Charley Hoffman is known for his green glove that he always wears, but Hoffman also hit one of the longest drives in history at the 2009 Texas Open. This big hit has a funny story behind it, Hoffman rocked up to the 1st tee at LaCantera without hitting any golf balls on the driving range and proceeded to rip it 467 yards down the first hole, cold turkey.

10. Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson
  • Distance: 463 yards
  • Tournament: 2011 Deutsche Bank
  • Golf course: TPC Boston
  • Hole: 7th hole

DJ is the only golfer to make the list twice which cements his name as one of the longest hitters of all time. Dustin’s second longest drive came at the 2011 Deutsche Bank Championship on the 7th hole at TPC Boston. The 7th is a par 5 that measured 600 yards, DJ ripped it 463 yards down the fairway and a wedge in from about 150 for his second shot.

k-reward design, provided the perfect stage for Stallings to showcase his power off the tee. Favorable conditions, including firm fairways and a helping wind, contributed to the extraordinary distance achieved.

Longest drive on the European Tour

Nicolas Colsaerts. Source.

Stat tracking on the European Tour isn’t up to the standard found on the PGA Tour. There is no doubt however about the longest drive on the European Tour, this honor belongs to Nicolas Colsaerts. The Belgian blasted a 447-yard drive down the par 5 18th hole at Celtic Manor during the Wales Open in 2014. A plaque can be found in the 18th fairway at Celtic Manor in commemoration of Colsaerts’ record breaking drive.

Longest drive by a long drive professional

American long drive professional Kyle Berkshire holds the record for the longest drive in a long drive event. In October 2023, at Rochelle Ranch Golf Course in Rawlins, Wyoming, Berkshire achieved a 579-yard drive. This remarkable feat was aided by favorable conditions, including a 22-mph tailwind and the course’s elevation of 6,700 feet above sea level. Nonetheless, it stands as the longest drive ever documented.

The 5 longest recorded drives on the LPGA Tour

Stat tracking on the LPGA Tour isn’t up to the standard found on the PGA Tour. Driving distance is only measured on a select number of holes during the course of a round in order to establish the average driving distance of a player.

Below are the 5 longest recorded drives on the LPGA Tour

Longest drive by a female long drive professional

Phillis Meti. Source.

New Zealander, Phillis Meti, holds the record for the longest drive by a female golfer. Meti, a long drive professional, held the record previously before breaking it twice in one day in 2019 at the AK-Chin Smash in the Sun long drive event in Arizona. The initial record of 406 yards came in 2017 at a World Long Drive event in Colorado before improving the record to 414 yards in 2019.

Meti’s achievements have solidified her status as one of the premier athletes in long drive competitions. Her record-breaking performances continue to inspire and set new benchmarks in the sport.

Final thoughts

The pursuit of greater driving distance continues to be a central focus in professional golf, with players like Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Justin Thomas consistently pushing the boundaries. Notably, Bryson DeChambeau underwent a significant physical transformation, adding nearly 40 pounds (18 kg) to enhance his power off the tee. This effort led him to lead the PGA Tour in driving distance in 2020, averaging 322.1 yards, and in 2021, with an average of 323.7 yards.

However, DeChambeau later expressed regrets about his extreme bulking strategy, citing health concerns and a subsequent weight loss to improve his well-being.

The trend toward increasing driving distances is evident across the PGA Tour. In 2023, the average driving distance surpassed 300 yards for the first time, reaching 301 yards.

As technology advances and players continue to focus on physical conditioning, it’s anticipated that both male and female golfers will achieve even greater distances in the future.

In 2024, this trend persisted, with Cameron Champ leading the PGA Tour in driving distance, averaging 322.8 yards per drive. Rory McIlroy followed closely, averaging 320.2 yards.

These figures underscore the ongoing emphasis on power and distance in the modern game.

Additionally, advancements in equipment technology and training methodologies have enabled players to maximize their driving capabilities. The integration of data analytics and biomechanical assessments has allowed golfers to fine-tune their swings for optimal distance and accuracy.

As the sport continues to evolve, the balance between power and precision remains crucial. While driving distance offers a competitive edge, course management and short game proficiency are equally vital for success at the highest levels of golf.

Important Factors to Consider When Buying a Golf Rangefinder

Buying a golf rangefinder is easier said than done given that the market is flooded with a wide variety of options to choose from. Below we are going to take a closer look at some of the most important factors to consider when buying a new rangefinder.

Technology

Golf rangefinders are packed with technology and for most golfers, the technical jargon can be quite confusing. Below we are going to discuss three of the most important technical aspects when it comes to the design of rangefinders.

Slope

Rangefinder slope technology is very common and most golfers are familiar with this technology. But for those who aren’t, slope refers to the calculation of undulation. Golf rangefinders that feature slope technology will measure the distance to the hole and it will also give a secondary measurement which includes a calculation based on the uphill or downhill gradient between the player and the hole.

Slope is a “nice to have” feature but just because a rangefinder can’t measure slope doesn’t mean that it is a bad rangefinder. If your home club has a lot of undulation then I will recommend a rangefinder with slope, but if not then a rangefinder that doesn’t measure slope will work just fine.

Dual Display Technology (DDT)

Dual display technology (DDT) refers to the display color options available when looking through the rangefinder at the target. Rangefinders with DDT allow you to alternate between either a black or a red display.

The red tends to be more visible when conditions are dark/overcast and vice versa in sunny bright conditions with the black display option.

Pinseeker Technology

The reason for using a rangefinder is to get an accurate distance to your target. Pinseeker technology ensures just that. More often than not trees or other objects can be found behind a green and when using a rangefinder a golfer can very easily pick up one of these trees or objects instead of the flag.

Pinseeker technology aims to prevent this from happening. This technology sends a vibration through the rangefinder that can be felt in your hand once the rangefinder has locked in on its target. This technology ensures exceptional accuracy but just to be 100% certain always “shoot” a tree behind the flag to get a reference point in terms of distance. If the tree and the distance to the flag match then you know that

you have made a mistake.

To see Pinseeker technology in action click here.

Durability

Durability is a very important factor to consider when buying a rangefinder. The last thing any golfer wants is to spend hundreds of dollars on a product that lacks durability.

It is very easy for a rangefinder to take a couple of knocks out on the golf course, players can easily drop them on the ground or they can fall out of your golf cart just as easily. In addition to bumps and falls it is also very important to consider durability in terms of protection against excessive heat or rain.

Most rangefinders come with a protective case. Make sure to keep your rangefinder in its protective case at all times when not in use to protect it against unnecessary bumps and mother nature.

Price

Price always plays a part in any purchase decision. When it comes to rangefinders price is a very important factor for a variety of different reasons. The most expensive rangefinder isn’t always the best option for you. Make sure that the rangefinder ticks all the boxes from a functionality standpoint, just because it costs the most doesn’t mean it has all the bells and whistles that you need.

Rangefinders are built to last many years, don’t try to save in the short term by going for a cheaper option, in the long run, this might come back to bite you. Rather spend a little bit more initially by purchasing a high-quality rangefinder that will last for many years to come.

Benefits of Using a Golf Rangefinder

Traditional golfers still think that players should use on-course distance markers and their judgment to calculate the distance that they have to the flag, but with advances in distance measuring tools and other golf gadgets, the majority of golfers are leaning towards rangefinders and other distance devices.

Buying a rangefinder is not cheap but it’s definitely worth the investment. The list of benefits includes ease of use, being able to get an accurate distance to the flag from anywhere on the golf course, slope measurement, distances to carry over water or bunkers and the list goes on and on.

The European Tour recently announced that rangefinders will be allowed at a limited number of events during the 2021 season. The use of rangefinders on leading professional tours remains a hotly debated topic and it will be interesting to see how this unfolds on the world’s 2nd biggest professional golf tour.

FAQs

What does a golf rangefinder do?

A golf rangefinder is a device that helps golfers determine the distance to a target. There are many different types of rangefinders on the market, and each one of them offers different features.

Why use a golf rangefinder?

Golf rangefinders are tools that help golfers improve their game by offering a wealth of information about the distance to the front, middle and back of the green. The rangefinder displays in yards, meters or even feet. They are lightweight and very easy to use.

Where is the best place to aim your rangefinder?

The answer to this question depends. If you are trying to get the distance to the flag the best place is to aim your rangefinder at the flag/top of the flagstick. Most new flagsticks feature reflectors which make it easier for rangefinders to pick up the flagstick despite background objects.

If you are trying to get the distance over a bunker or water make sure to aim the rangefinder at the lip of the bunker or the edge of the water, once you have that distance always add 5 – 10 yards to make sure that your carry distance is comfortably past danger.

How long do rangefinder batteries last?

How long your rangefinder battery will last depends on the battery type and how often the rangefinder gets used. Rechargeable batteries can last for multiple rounds at a time before charging is required. Disposable batteries on the other hand can last for months on end without having to get replaced.

If your rangefinder uses a disposable battery make sure to always keep an extra option in your bag since these batteries go dead without warning.

Are rangefinders legal for use during tournaments?

Whether or not your rangefinder is legal or not for tournament use will depend on two factors. First of all the tournament that you are playing in needs to have a local rule in place that allows for the use of measuring devices.

Second, the rangefinder needs to be conforming, what that means is that the slope function of the rangefinder must be disabled during tournament play. If the slope function can’t be disabled your rangefinder will not be legal for tournament use.

In addition to slope, if a rangefinder calculates any other factors such as the wind or altitude it will not be allowed under the rules of golf. A rangefinder can only be legally used to calculate the distance in tournament play.

How accurate are golf rangefinders?

Golf rangefinders are accurate and convenient. While it is true that the technology has improved, these devices still do what they’re made to do: find the distance of a golf hole. Some of the most popular models are laser technology-based, which is more accurate than traditional optical rangefinders with reflective technology used in older models.

Where to aim a golf rangefinder?

Start by aiming you golf rangefinder at the ground, before lifting it up to aim it at your intended target.

How do laser rangefinders differ from GPS rangefinders?

Laser rangefinders use a laser beam to measure the exact distance to a target by calculating the time it takes for the laser to return. They provide precise measurements to specific points, such as flagsticks. In contrast, GPS rangefinders rely on satellite data to provide distances to various points on the course, like the front, middle, and back of greens. While GPS devices offer broader information, laser rangefinders are often more accurate for pinpointing exact distances.

Are golf rangefinders allowed in tournaments?

The use of rangefinders in tournaments depends on the competition’s rules. Many amateur events permit rangefinders that measure distance only. However, devices with slope measurement capabilities, which calculate elevation changes, are typically prohibited unless the slope feature can be disabled. It’s essential to check the specific tournament guidelines before use.

How does slope adjustment work in rangefinders, and is it necessary?

Slope adjustment in rangefinders accounts for elevation changes between your position and the target, providing a “plays like” distance. For instance, a shot to an elevated green might require more club than the actual yardage suggests. While this feature is beneficial for practice rounds and understanding course nuances, it’s usually disabled during official tournaments to comply with regulations.

What is the typical battery life of a golf rangefinder?

Battery life varies by model and usage. Many rangefinders use CR2 batteries, lasting approximately 40 to 50 rounds or an average golf season. Some modern devices come with rechargeable batteries, offering convenience and potentially longer lifespans. It’s advisable to carry a spare battery to avoid interruptions during play.

Are there alternatives to traditional rangefinders for measuring distances on the course?

Yes, golfers have several alternatives:

  • Smartphone Apps: Many apps provide GPS-based distance measurements and course maps.
  • Golf Watches: Wearable devices offer quick access to yardages and other features.
  • Course Markers: Physical markers on the course indicate distances to the green.

Each alternative has its pros and cons regarding accuracy, convenience, and cost.

Final Thoughts

A golf rangefinder is a great addition to the bag of any golfer. Gone are the days where you have to go on the hunt for a distance on a sprinkler head. With so many great options to choose from picking the right option for your needs might seem tricky but with the help of our buying guide, those worries should be a thing of the past.

If you play in tournaments regularly make sure to purchase a rangefinder that allows for additional functionalities to be disabled during tournament play. Last but not least don’t bargain hunt when buying a rangefinder, yes saving some money is always welcome but don’t sacrifice on quality just to save a few dollars.

Indoor Putting Greens vs. Putting Training Mats

Practice putting greens and putting training mats are very similar in terms of functionality but they do differ in terms of design. We will take a closer look at these differences in the section below.

Putting mats can be rolled up, they are lightweight and they tend to be on the lower end of the price spectrum. In comparison, putting greens feature bulkier heavier designs. These greens with their rubber bases can’t be stored as easily and they aren’t designed for traveling. These greens also tend to be on the more expensive side of the price spectrum.

Factors to Consider when Buying a Golf Putting Green

With so many options to choose from, finding the perfect putting green is easier said than done. Below we are going to take a closer look at key factors to consider when buying a putting green. By using these key factors as a guideline, finding that perfect putting green won’t be as daunting.

Functionality

Functionality is arguably the most important factor to consider when buying a new golf putting green. Golf putting greens are available in two different types, training mats and solid rubber/nylon practice putting greens.

Training mats are easy to store, affordable and most feature graphics with various drills and games that one can play while practicing on the mat. Mats with thin bases tend to have creases when rolled out. These creases can affect the roll of the ball when practicing on the mat. Ideally, you want the mat to be as smooth as possible to mimic the roll on a real green.

Solid putting greens with rubber bases offer exceptional roll that mimics how a golf ball rolls on a green. These rubber-based putting greens offer great feel, but these putting greens are big and bulky and can’t be moved around with ease like a travel mat.

Size

The question you have to ask yourself is why am I buying a golf putting green. Will this putting green be a permanent fixture in my garage or study, or do I want the option of taking it with me on the road?

The answer to this question will dictate which practice green option and size meets your needs. Putting mats are lightweight and can be folded up with ease. These mats are ideal for golfers that travel or if you only want to use the mat occasionally whilst storing it safely when you aren’t using it.

Rubber-based mats are big and bulky, these mats can’t be stored easily, and traveling with one is not recommended. With these rubber mats make sure to buy one that allows you to practice putts that range in distance from about 3 feet to 12 feet.

Durability

Durability is always important when buying any product. This is no different when it comes to golf practice greens. Golf practice greens are high ticket items, further emphasizing the importance of durability.

In addition to the actual durability of the product make sure to learn about how to care for your putting green or mat. Good care will prolong the lifespan of the product considerably. Leaving your putting green out in the wind, sun or rain definitely won’t help with durability. Make sure to store your practice putting green in a cool safe place when you aren’t using it.

The materials used in the manufacturing process also have a direct impact on durability. Make sure that the practice green that you want to buy is made out of strong durable materials. You might pay a bit more for a more durable design, but at the end of the day, the additional expense will be worth every penny.

FAQs

Below I have taken the time to answer some of the most common questions that golfers have about putting greens. If you have any additional questions that you would like me to answer please feel free to comment in the comments section of this article.

Are there putting greens suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?

Yes, some putting greens are designed for versatility:

  • Big Moss Putting Greens: These offer a balance of quality and affordability, with options ranging from 4-foot training greens to 60-foot long putting surfaces, suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Aucuda Golf Putting Practice Mat: This mat features adjustable speeds and slope simulators, making it adaptable for various practice environments.

What factors should I consider when choosing a putting green?

When selecting a putting green, consider the following:

  • Size: Ensure the dimensions fit your available space.
  • Surface Quality: Look for a surface that mimics real green conditions for effective practice.
  • Portability: If you plan to move it frequently, choose a lightweight and easy-to-roll-up model.
  • Durability: High-quality materials will withstand regular use, especially for outdoor setups.

How can an indoor putting green improve my game?

An indoor putting green allows for consistent practice regardless of weather conditions. Regular use can help you develop a more consistent stroke, improve alignment, and enhance distance control, all of which are crucial for effective putting on the course.

Are there any innovative features to look for in modern putting greens?

Modern putting greens often come with features such as alignment aids, adjustable slopes, and speed variations. Some advanced models even offer digital feedback or integrate with apps to provide real-time analysis of your putting stroke, helping you identify areas for improvement.

Are putting greens worth the money?

There is no right or wrong answer to the question. Whether it is worth it or not will mainly depend on if you are going to take the time to use it. If you are serious about improving your putting, investing in an indoor putting green or training mat will be money well spent.

If your new putting green is going to turn into a white elephant then you might feel differently about your decision to buy one. Take the time to use your putting green, not only will you get your money’s worth, but your putting will also benefit greatly from the extra practice time.

What are the best drills to practice on an indoor putting green?

Some indoor practice mats feature various drills and games on the designs of the mat. These easy-to-follow drills are great for beginners that want to work on the fundamentals of their putting strokes.

If your putting green doesn’t feature any drills don’t worry, there are lots of other drills that you can do on your putting green to improve your stroke. Working on the path of your stroke is one of the best drills for any golfer regardless of your skill level. Place two clubs or alignment sticks on your putting green about a putter width apart. The tracks formed with the clubs need to be aimed at the hole. Putt to the hole from between the tracks, this drill will ensure a square stroke through impact.

Putting greens can also be used when working on your posture or setup. The only real limitation of these indoor greens is if you want to practice your long-range speed putting.

How fast are indoor putting greens compared to normal greens?

The speed of your indoor putting green will depend on the design of the green and the material used in the design. The speed of most indoor putting greens and training mats will probably be classified as medium when compared to the speed of a regular green.

To maintain the speed of your putting green make sure to take good care of it. Store your putting green in a cool dry place and make sure that heavy items aren’t placed on top of it in storage. Damage to the surface of the putting green can interfere with the speed of the green.

How can I pick a good golf putting green?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a golf putting green. For instance, the size of the green, the type of turf, and whether you need a slope.

The size of the green is important because it determines how much ground you have to cover when you take your putt. The type of turf is also important because it will impact how much time it takes for your ball to roll through the green. Lastly, if you need a slope, then that will determine how fast or slow your ball rolls down the green.

To help make this decision easier for you, we have compiled some tips on what to look for in a putting green and what factors to consider before buying one.

What are some of the factors that make a good putting green?

A putting green is an important part of a golf game. It is the surface on which a player will practice his or her skills.

The factors that make a good putting green are:

– the size of the putting surface

– the level of slope

– the speed and consistency of greens

Which are the best brands of golf putting greens?

The best brands of golf putting greens are those that you can easily assemble and disassemble for storage or transport. They also have a wide range of colors and designs which makes them easier to choose from.

Pebble is the best brand of golf putting green because it has a wide range of colors and designs, is easy to assemble, and is easy to store.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Golf Push Cart

Functionality and Size

Buying a push cart can be quite daunting considering how many options there are to choose from. Clicgear used to be head and shoulders above the rest of its competitors but this isn’t the case anymore. Functionality and size are two very important factors to consider when shopping for a push cart. Does it offer added storage, can accessories like a cup holder, umbrella stand, or seat be attached? Does the cart feature a brake?

In addition to functionality, size is equally as important. Is it big enough to fit my bag? Is the design lightweight to ensure easy pushing? How big is the cart when folded up? At the end of the day, your ideal push cart should meet all of your requirements in terms of both functionality and size.

Durability

Durability is always an important factor to consider when buying any product and this is no different when it comes to golf push carts. Push carts get exposed to different weather conditions, dust and mud will accumulate on your cart over time and the general terrain of a golf course will test the cart’s durability.

Considering that a push cart is a sizable investment your push cart of choice needs to be very durable. In addition to buying a durable push cart make sure to take care of your cart to extend its durability. If you played a round in wet muddy conditions make sure to clean your cart before storing it away. Store it in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. If you take good care of your push cart it will last for many years.

Price

Last but not least is the price tag of push carts. Leading push carts feature hefty price tags but considering that these carts last for many years it is worth the spend. Make sure to buy a push cart that offers good value for money, you don’t want to sacrifice quality just to save a little bit of money, in the long run spending a bit more to get the perfect push cart for you will be worth every cent.

FAQs

Is it better to push or pull a golf cart?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Historically traditional golf carts were pull carts that featured a 2 wheeled design. Modern golf push carts feature 3 or 4 wheeled designs that are specifically designed for pushing.

By pushing a cart you can maintain your normal posture when walking without having to twist your shoulder behind you as is the case when pulling a cart.

Are golf push carts worth the spend?

Golf push carts are without a doubt worth the spend. At face value, they might seem expensive but once you start doing the math your perception will take a 180-degree turn. The fee for renting a golf cart or a caddie will quickly add up to equal the cost of a push cart within a few months depending on how often you play.

Modern push carts feature high-quality designs that are built to last for many years and over time they prove their worth over and over. Carrying your bag is a cheap alternative, but if you pick up any back or shoulder injuries as a result a trip to the physio will almost be the price of a push cart.

What is the difference between a 3 and 4 wheel golf push cart?

3 and 4 wheeled push carts function similarly, both carts are designed to push, their frames are just slightly different hence the option of featuring either 3 or 4 wheels. 4 wheeled push carts are exceptionally balanced thanks to their sturdy base but in terms of functionality both carts function equally.

What are the advantages of using a golf push cart?

Push carts are a useful tool for golfers and can make the game more enjoyable. They can help golfers carry their clubs, balls, and other accessories on their walks to the course.

Push carts are available in different shapes and sizes to suit all needs. They can be used for carrying clubs, balls, and accessories while walking to the course or even while playing a round of golf.

Irons account for nearly half of the clubs that a golfer is allowed to carry in their bag. Standard golf sets feature 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 irons. Irons are available in different shapes and sizes and they are made out of different materials. In this article we will take a look at everything about the golf iron, we will examine different iron types, design features and we will also look at which iron type is best for who.

Different irons have different clubhead styles and designs. Clubhead style is a very important aspect that one should consider before purchasing a new set of irons. Are you a beginner that requires the assistance of game improvement irons? Is your ball striking good enough for a set of muscle-back irons? These are the types of questions to keep in mind when deciding what type of irons is best for you and your game.

1. Blade / Muscle Back Irons

Muscle back irons are commonly known as blades because they resemble the look of a butter knife. These irons with their small clubheads are commonly found in the bags of professional and low handicap amateur players that are exceptional ball strikers.

Muscle back irons also offer exceptional workability and this is one of the main reasons why professional players opt for blade irons. Muscle back irons have very small clubheads, if you miss the sweet spot it will be evident in the results. Blades with their sleek designs do look good but these irons are only suitable for a very small portion of the golfing population.

2. Cavity Back Irons

Titleist 718 Cavity Back Iron

Cavity back irons offer the best of both worlds in terms of forgiveness and performance. Cavity back shaped clubheads are becoming popular features in the bags of professional golfers. The world’s best ball strikers seem to prefer the forgiveness of cavity-back clubheads over the workability of muscle back irons.

The slick design of cavity back irons is visually appealing to many golfers and the exceptional forgiveness and feel of these irons add to the popularity of cavity back irons. The versatility of cavity back irons is why these irons are suitable for players of all skill levels.

3. Game Improvement Irons

If added distance and consistency with your iron play is on your wishlist then you should think about investing in a set of game improvement irons. Game improvement irons feature a larger profile which might not appeal to all golfers but one can’t argue with results that these oversize irons deliver.

Game improvement irons offer more than just big clubheads, the design of these irons are packed with other game improvement technological advances. Game improvement irons feature design characteristics that enhance distance, promote a stronger/higher ball flight, and consistency on off-center hits.

4. Super Game Improvement Irons

Titleist T400 Super Game Improvement Iron
Titleist T400 Super Game Improvement Iron

Super game improvement irons feature a big profile that resembles the look of a hybrid. Super game improvement iron sets traditionally feature long irons with hybrid-like designs and short irons with a traditional iron clubhead design.

These irons might not look very appealing to the traditional golfer, but beginners, ladies and senior players with slow clubhead speeds will all benefit greatly by using these irons. Super game improvement irons promote added distance, a high ball flight and exceptional forgiveness on off-center hits.

Cast vs. Forged Irons

Forged and cast refer to the two different ways that iron clubheads are made. When cast irons are manufactured hot metal is poured into a mold or a cast which gives the iron heads it’s distinct shape. In comparison forged irons are carved out of a solid piece of metal. Forging is an intricate, expensive process but the consensus amongst golfers is that it does produce a better iron head.

Forged irons are softer than cast irons and these iron heads can be adjusted with ease in terms of lie and loft, cast irons, on the other hand, aren’t easy to bend. Forged irons are more forgiving than cast irons and this along with their ability to be adjusted are the main reasons why pros and low handicap players prefer forged irons. Iron loft & lie angles explained

Loft and lie angles are terms that get used loosely amongst golfers. Loft and lie angles, however, are two very important factors to consider when buying a new set of irons.

Beginners won’t be affected by these angles as much but players that have fairly good turf interaction at impact definitely will. Players with good ball-striking capabilities need to ensure that they are playing with the correct loft and lie on their irons.

The loft of the club determines the distance that the golf ball will fly through the air. If all of a sudden your 9 iron and your 8 iron fly roughly the same distance then it could be that the loft on one of them is out. If your home club has a loft and lie machine it is recommended to check your lofts regularly to ensure that they are the same as when you bought your set.

Also, different manufacturers have different standard lofts, make sure to check the standard loft of your current irons as well as on your new irons if you were to purchase a new set. It could be that there is a 2-3 degree difference which could result in nearly a 10-yard difference. Standard lofts also differ amongst iron types regardless of manufacturer.

It is common practice for game improvement irons to have slightly stronger standard lofts in comparison to either cavity back or blade irons. If you are planning on switching between these respective clubhead styles make sure to check the standard lofts for personal reference.

Lie angle affects the direction of the golf ball. The lie angle of the club refers to the angle between the ground and the hosel of the club. Lie angle plays a role with turf interaction which in return affects direction. If a club is too upright the toe will dig into the ground first and vice versa with a club that is too flat.

A smashboard is a great tool that will assist you with checking your lie angles. Make sure to visit your local pro shop or golf retailer, they will be able to assist you with checking and adjusting your lie angles if needed. It is important to keep in mind that the lie angles of forged irons are easily adjusted, but with cast irons, only small adjustments can be made. Cast irons can snap in the hosel if it is adjusted too much or regularly.

A general rule of thumb is that taller than average golfers will need clubs that are slightly upright and shorter golfers such as kids will need irons with flatter lie angles. This is just a general rule of thumb, arm length, the golfer’s setup and a host of other factors can also influence which lie angle is best suited for you. Loft and lie angles can be confusing, to learn more about this topic click here

Best Iron Types for Beginners

Beginner golfers differ vastly in terms of ability and skill. It is impossible to compare a junior golfer that takes up the game to a senior golfer that wants to start playing golf after they retire.

With that being said it is important for beginners of all levels to start with a good set of irons that will kickstart their golf journey.

Game improvement irons are great irons for beginners regardless of skill level. These oversize irons are more affordable than forged cavity back irons, they promote added distance and height and they offer maximum forgiveness as a result of their big sweet spots. Super game improvement irons are renowned for their forgiveness but the market is packed with other forgiving iron options. To find out what the 5 most forgiving irons currently available on the market are click here

Best Iron Types for Low Handicappers

It is safe to assume that a low handicapper can hit the ball fairly well. Players with above-average ball-striking abilities can benefit greatly by playing with forged cavity back irons. Forged irons can be adjusted with ease in terms of lie and loft, this is key for a low handicapper to ensure good turf interaction and distance control.

Forged cavity back irons don’t have the big sweet spots that game improvement irons do. As a result cavity back irons offer exceptional workability because their design doesn’t reduce spin which is the case with game improvement irons. For high handicappers, spin equates to wild shots all over the place, for low handicappers optimal spin equates to either a controlled draw or fade.

Conclusion

The 4 most popular iron types are muscle back, cavity back, game improvement and super game improvement irons. Each of these iron types features different design characteristics. Muscle back irons are most common amongst professionals and super game improvement irons can be found in the bags of beginners and senior players that want added distance and height to their iron shots.

There is no right or wrong as to what type of irons you should play with, at the end of the day it comes down to your individual needs and skill level.

One of the first questions that golfers tend to ask each other is: “What is your handicap?” Non-golfers might hear this and feel offended, but handicap is a golf term and trust me as a beginner you will learn to appreciate the fact that you do have a handicap.

If the handicap concept is foreign to you don’t worry, below we will look at what a golf handicap is and we will also look at the importance of a handicap for golfers.

The Golf Handicap Explained

Gold-Handicap-Estimator
Golf Handicap Estimator

A golf handicap is defined as a numerical measure of a golfer’s potential. A golf handicap also allows players of different skill levels to compete against one another on a level playing field thanks to their respective handicaps.

The rules of golf is a single set of rules that is overseen by the USGA and the R&A, one would think that a universal handicap system exists, but this isn’t the case. Currently, there are six different handicap systems around the world, all sis are well developed and very effective, but they all produce slightly different outputs.

The World Handicap System (WHS) is looking to change this and its goal is to unify these systems into one system. With a universal handicapping system in place, players from different countries will be able to compete against each other on a fair basis at any course around the globe. The administration of international amateur competitions where handicaps are used will also be a lot easier to administer. Overall it will provide a more enjoyable experience across the board.

To learn more about the World Handicap System visit either www.usga.org or www.randa.org or www.whs.com.

Must-Know Handicap Terms

Handicap Index (HI)

Handicap Index is an indication of the golfer’s potential as a player. In numerical terms, your HI will be 96% of the average of the best 10 differentials for your last 20 rounds played.

Course Handicap (CH)

Your course handicap is the calculated handicap that you will use out on the golf course. Your course handicap will be dependent on the course rating of the tee boxes that you are playing from on the day.

Course Handicap Conversion Tables (CHCT)

CHCT tables will be displayed on a club’s notice board as well as on the 1st or 10th tee box. These tables will show you what your course handicap is for all respective tees based on your handicap index.

Course Rating (CR)

The course rating is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a golf course for scratch golfers under normal circumstances (course and weather conditions). The course rating is expressed as a number (one decimal place) and it is based on various factors including distance and other obstacles that affect scoring difficulty for a scratch golfer.

Slope Rating (SR)

Slope rating refers to the relative difficulty of a set of tees for a higher handicapped golfer in comparison to a scratch golfer. SR is expressed as a numerical number with the lowest being 55 and the highest being 155.

Differential

As mentioned above differential forms part of the equation when calculating your handicap index. The following formula is how differentials are calculated.

  • Handicap Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score – CR) x 113/SR

Adjusted Gross Score

Adjusted gross refers to the maximum amount of strokes that a golfer can take on an unfinished hole. For example for a scratch golfer, the maximum number of shots allowed on a hole unless they are competing in a medal/stroke play tournament is a bogey. If a scratch golfer gets a double bogey on a hole they will score zero points on that hole. On the scorecard however it is important to write it down as a 6, this is your adjusted gross score. Maximum shots on a hole will depend on your HI, to learn more about it click here

Golf Handicap FAQs

How often is my Handicap Index calculated?

Handicap Indexes are updated and revised daily at 4 pm. Players have 24 hours after completion of a round to enter their score either through the WHS app or via the terminal at the golf course where they played. Players that don’t enter their scores within 24 hours will be subject to receiving a penalty round.

Must I enter all of my scores?

The answer to this question is almost always yes unless one of the below situations apply:

  • When the score cannot be confirmed by a playing partner or competitor
  • When the types or number of golf clubs used were limited (for example in a competition in which only irons were allowed)
  • When the round played included the use of “Mulligans”
  • When more than one ball was used at a time
  • When the course played is not officially rated including when a course is set up much longer or shorter than the average playing length when the rating of the course was determined
  • When the player used non-conforming clubs, balls or tees, or with respect to Rule 14-3 (Rules of Golf) where an artificial device was used in the execution of stroke or when the equipment was used in an unusual manner during the execution of a stroke

Must I enter a nine-hole score for Handicap Index purposes?

Yes. Players are obliged to enter all nine-hole scores into their respective handicap systems except when the situations in the previous question apply.

What is a good Handicap Index?

The answer to this question depends, it depends on your individual goals as well as your skills. But to give you an idea players with single figure handicaps will score in the ’70s on a regular basis, 10 – 18 handicappers are capable of shooting in the 80’s on a regular basis, and so on.

Conclusion

The golf handicap system has undergone a lot of changes in recent years, but it is important for golfers to familiarize themselves with the system to ensure that they use it accurately.

The golf handicap is what makes golf so great, it allows players of different skill levels to compete against each other on a level playing field. For high-level amateurs and professional players, a handicap becomes irrelevant as their careers progress, but for a club golfer, it is an integral part of being a golfer.

Important Factors to Consider When Buying Women’s Golf Shoes

Buying a new pair of shoes for any woman can be quite the ordeal, some women are definitely more decisive than others when it comes to fashion decisions. In order to make this process a little bit easier we are going to look at some of the most important factors to consider when buying a new pair of shoes.

Style

Golf shoes are available in a variety of style options with traditional and casual being the two main styles. Traditional golf shoes are normally leather golf shoes whereas casual golf shoes resemble the look of sneakers/running shoes.

Women’s golf shoes are available in many different color options and some manufacturers aren’t shy to incorporate bold colors and patterns in their designs. A bright pink shoe is definitely eye-catching but think about how a colorful shoe will match your wardrobe. The last thing you want is to spend a fortune on a pair of shoes that don’t match with anything.

Spikes or spikeless

Modern golf shoes are either available with soft spikes or as spikeless options. Metal spikes are definitely a thing of the past. Up until recently LPGA professional Christina Kim still chose to wear metal spikes but she is one of a select few players that still do.

Spikeless options are becoming more and more popular and spikeless designs have also improved drastically over the last couple of years. The majority of female golfers don’t swing the club as fast as their male counterparts and as a result, less grip from spikes is required to prevent slipping.

Before buying a new pair of shoes make sure to put some thought into this to ensure that you have a clear understanding of whether or not you want shoes with spikes or spikeless shoes.

Comfort

The importance of buying a pair of comfortable golf shoes can’t be overstated. Golfers spend a lot of time walking around in their golf shoes and the last thing any player wants is to have to deal with blisters and sore feet after a round.

When buying new shoes make sure that the shoes fit properly to ensure maximum comfort and wear the shoes around the house a couple of times before walking 18 holes with them. Leather shoes in particular take a few rounds to walk in.

Durability

Durability is always important with the purchase of any new product and this is no different when buying golf shoes. Golfers expose their golf shoes to the elements and with that in mind, it is important to buy a durable set of golf shoes that can withstand getting wet and being in the sand.

Price

Female opinion differs when it comes to price. Some women love a bargain and others have no limits when it comes to splurging on new shoes. In the case of women’s golf shoes, it is about finding a happy medium between these two extremes.

More often than not cheap shoes are great until they aren’t. Don’t be shy to spend a little extra to ensure you buy a pair of golf shoes that are functional, durable, and comfortable.

On the other end just because a shoe is expensive doesn’t mean that it is functional, make sure to buy a pair that works for your needs instead of focussing on the design.

FAQs

What should I look for in a good pair of women’s golf shoes?

Key factors to consider include comfort, waterproofing, breathability, style, and the type of sole (spikes or spikeless) to ensure the right support for your golf game.

Are spikeless golf shoes suitable for wet conditions?

Yes, spikeless golf shoes can perform well in wet conditions if they are designed with waterproofing technology, such as those found in Nike and FootJoy models.

How do I know if my golf shoes fit properly?

Golf shoes should fit snugly around the foot without being too tight. There should be enough room to wiggle your toes while still providing support during your swing.

Can I wear my women’s golf shoes off the course?

Many women’s golf shoes are designed with stylish, versatile looks that can easily transition from the course to casual outings, especially models from Nike and Ecco.

How often should I replace my women’s golf shoes?

Replace your golf shoes when the soles show significant wear, or the waterproofing and cushioning no longer provide the necessary support and comfort.

What is the difference between men’s and women’s golf shoes?

From a functional point of view there are no differences between men’s and women’s golf shoes. Women’s golf shoes are available in smaller sizes than men’s shoes and color options also differ. Women with bigger wider feet often opt for neutral-colored men’s shoes to ensure maximum comfort.

How should my golf shoes fit?

Fit depends on personal preference but as a general rule a golf shoe shouldn’t be too tight and it shouldn’t be too loose either. If a shoe is too tight it will cause discomfort and if a shoe is too loose it will cause issues with how your feet interact with the ground during your swing. Chances of slipping are also increased by shoes that are too loose.

How often do I need to buy new golf shoes?

The answer to this question depends. Some women like to have a new pair of shoes each year to watch their wardrobe. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how often you play and if your golf shoes are spikeless or if they have replaceable spikes.

What are the most popular golf shoes for women?

There are a lot of options for women to choose from when it comes to golf shoes. From the classic Nike Golf shoes to the trendy Adidas, there is a wide selection of golf shoes for women.

The most popular golf shoes for women are Nike and Adidas. These are some of the most popular brands in the industry and they offer a wide range of choices that cater to different shoe sizes, styles, and budgets.

Do womens golf shoes have any benefits over mens golf shoes?

Women golfers have a lot of options when it comes to golf shoes. There are different types of womens golf shoes that have their own benefits.

– Women’s golf shoes typically have a smaller heel and narrower toes than men’s. This is due to the fact that women are more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis, which can be caused by wearing men’s size-13 or larger shoes.

– Women’s golf shoes often come in lighter colors, like white and pink, so they don’t get as dirty as fast. The lighter colors also make it easier for women to see the ball while playing on the green.

What type of shoe is best for playing golf on hard surfaces?

The best golf shoes are designed with a rubber sole and should be comfortable. They should also have a wide toe box and a good fit.

How do I choose the right womens golf shoe size?

Picking the right shoe size for your feet is a personal decision. If you are unsure of how to go about picking the right size, consider visiting a retail store near you and trying on a few pairs. If you cannot do that, try finding some online retailers that offer free returns.

How often should you change golf shoes?

The average golfer should change their golf shoes every six rounds. It is important to have a clean pair of golf shoes to avoid any possible health risks.

Final Thoughts

Buying new golf shoes is quite an exciting event for most female golfers but with so many options available it can be quite a tricky process. A good pair of golf shoes won’t just add style to your outfit, it will also ensure maximum comfort while walking around the golf course.

Most women are attracted to how a shoe looks, but just because it looks good doesn’t mean that it is durable, comfortable, and functional. When buying a new pair of golf shoes make sure to keep that in mind without getting distracted by flashy colors and accessories.

Golf Driver Buyers Guide

The addition of the correct driver to your golf bag has the potential to be a game-changer, but some important aspects need to be considered before deciding on what driver to buy.

Driver design

Driver designs have changed drastically over the last 10 – 15 years. The consensus amongst golfers is that new drivers are too technologically advanced and that professionals are hitting the golf ball too far off the tee. Amateurs, however, disagree with that statement completely.

Most driver clubheads feature 460cc heads, these big heads are packed with features which include adjustable weights, loft and ball flight bias options. Drivers range in loft options but the majority of golfers play with a driver that is anywhere between 8 and 10 degrees. To learn more about driver designs read our The 3 Most Popular Types of Golf Woods article.

Shafts

Not all golfers swing the golf club at the same speed. Female and senior golfers tend to have slower swing speeds and the majority of low handicappers can swing the golf club faster than most.

Swing speed correlates to added distance, but swing speed also determines which shaft flex a player should use. The shaft is arguably the most important part of the set up of a driver. In addition to flex, torque, kick-point, and weight are other shaft characteristics that need to be considered when deciding on which driver shaft to play with.

If you can go for a custom fitting with a PGA professional then do that, a custom fitting is by far the best route to follow when buying a new driver. If you aren’t able to go for a custom fitting watch this video, it will assist you with choosing the correct shaft option.

Swing speed

Due to the design of a driver, you will be able to swing it faster than what you will be able to swing an iron. But regardless of that, it is important to realize the importance of clubhead speed. To optimize distance it is important to work on increasing your clubhead speed.

The majority of players on the PGA Tour all have average clubhead speeds above 110 mph. You don’t have to swing as fast as they do, but if you can add some clubhead speed you will add a few yards off the tee as a result.

Golf Driver FAQ’s

What degree is a driver?

Drivers are available in a variety of loft options. Most golfers play with drivers that range between 9 and 10.5 degrees but it isn’t uncommon for a player to have either an 8 or a 12-degree driver in their bag.

When to hit a driver?

95% of the time golfers will use their driver off of the tee. Occasionally some golfers will hit their driver from the fairway but this is very uncommon.

How to Hit a Driver

Drivers might have a big clubhead with a big sweet spot but that doesn’t mean that they are easy to hit. However, with the basics in place, you will be driving the golf ball consistently well in no time.

Setup

One of the key basic golf swing fundamentals that have to be correct to drive the golf ball well is a good setup. Below is a list of easy to remember set up checkpoints that will ensure that your set up stays correct on a consistent basis.

  • Align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to your target line
  • Feet should be slightly wider than shoulder-width apart
  • Set up with the ball positioned on the inside of the heel of your front foot
  • Distribute the weight around in your feet so that 55% of your weight is on your right (back) foot and that the remaining 45% is on your left (front) foot.
  • Tilt your right shoulder down slightly towards the ground in comparison to your left shoulder

Once you are set up accurately you will be able to swing freely which in return will give you the best opportunity to find the fairway. Rickie Fowler is one of the best drivers of a golf ball, to learn more about Rickie’s setup click here

Upward Angle of Attack

Technology such as Trackman has changed the way that golfers approach the golf game and golf swing. Trackman statistics have shown that the best players in the world have an upward angle of attack when hitting a driver, thus they are hitting the ball on the up. Click here to get a closer look at Rory McIlroy’s Trackman numbers.

To achieve an upward angle of attack with your driver multiple different components have to work together. First of all, it is important to set up with your ball position on the inside of your left heel and to have a slight tilt in your shoulders where the right shoulder tilts down to the ground. Both of these setup fundamentals will promote an upward angle of attack.

Hitting the ground with your driver is an immediate sign that your angle of attack is incorrect. To correct this, attempt to hit the ball as high as possible, this will automatically improve your angle of attack, and a sweeping motion will be achieved instead of a chopping motion.

Speed and Rhythm

All of the long hitters on the PGA Tour have high swing speeds, but they can control this speed to maintain accuracy. Without good rhythm swing speed will only cause long but very errand drives.

It is very important to keep this in mind when you are trying to hit that next drive as far as possible. As a golfer, you have to find a happy medium between speed and rhythm.

A good example of speed without rhythm can be seen when watching the World Long Drive Championship. Those guys only have one goal in mind and this is the distance through speed, but if you look at how inconsistent they are from an accuracy standpoint then it becomes very clear that to optimize your driving there has to be a balance between speed and rhythm.

Conclusion

Drivers are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Drivers can be set up in a variety of different options in terms of shaft, loft, weight, and face angle to ensure that it is optimal for you and your golf swing.

Drivers are must-have golf clubs, a good driver that is set up for you and your golf swing will go a long way in improving your scores, and this isn’t just true for amateur players, professional players will also agree with that statement.

The marketplace is flooded with driver offerings but the leading golf club manufacturers utilize technology in their driver designs that put them miles ahead of smaller manufacturers. With so many options to choose from it can be daunting to buy a new driver, but with some good guidance, you will be able to buy a driver that can take your golf game to new dimensions.
